How to start running from scratch

Running is a simple, affordable, and fun way to get in shape and improve your overall health. But for many people, starting a running program from scratch can be daunting. The good news is that it’s possible to go from zero to 5km in two months with a little patience, consistency, and effort.

  1. Start Slow: You don’t have to run 5km on day one. Instead, start with short runs of 10 to 15 minutes and gradually increase the distance.
  2. Be Consistent: Aim to run three to four times a week and keep the same schedule. Consistency is key to building endurance.
  3. Listen to Your Body: If you’re feeling pain or discomfort, stop and walk. Pay attention to your body and don’t push yourself too hard too soon.
  4. Cross-Train: Running is great, but it’s important to give your muscles a break. Incorporate strength training and stretching into your routine.
  5. Find a Running Buddy: Running with a friend can make the experience more enjoyable and help keep you motivated.
  6. Stay Hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after each run.
  7. Celebrate Your Progress: Set small goals along the way and reward yourself when you reach them. Celebrating your progress will keep you motivated and help you stay on track.

I started my running journey with a friend and we would go for short runs together. It was much easier and more fun than running alone. One of my biggest challenges was keeping up with my running schedule. But when I made running a priority, I started to see real progress.
